Dr. Alvin McKinney

 

 
Appreciating music has been a part of Alvin's life ever since he could remember.  He began playing drums at age four and by age twelve he was seriously studying the alto saxophone.  In addition to the various saxophones, Alvin currently performs on flute, clarinet and the midi controller. 

Alvin attended the University of Memphis where he studied and performed in Marching and Jazz Bands. There he studied Concert Woodwind and Classical Saxophone with Alan Rippe while earning his Bachelor of Arts in Saxophone Performance.

While working on his Masters in Music from the University of Michigan, Alvin studied and taught Jazz styles under the direction of Donald Sinta.  He later earned a Doctorate in Sacred Music from the Evangelical Christian College in Wetumpka, Alabama
.   
Throughout his many years of performing, Alvin has worked with such Artists as B.B. King, Louie Bellson, Clark Terry, Kirk Whalum, Billy Preston, Phil Upchurch, Jason Crabb & The Crabb Family, Andre Crouch, The Baptiste Family and countless others.  As a touring musician, he traveled to Russia, India, Spain, Switzerland, Barbados and numerous other Countries. 
  
Despite his busy performance schedule Alvin still finds time to teach Band and Orchestra.  He and his wife Founded the Al & Elizabeth McKinney Foundation which provides musical instruments and classes to aspiring young musicians. 

Dr. McKinney's Jazz Trio and Jazz Quartet can be seen performing throughout most of California.  In Los Angeles he can also be seen Hosting the Joyful Jazz Show.  The show highlights Artist's interviews and plays Inspirational Music.
